The obesity surgery market in India is booming, due to 8 per cent of the population being obese, as well as a deluge of foreign patients.
Obesity is increasingly posing itself as a serious problem in India, just as in many developed countries like the USA and the UK.
India's obesity level is around 8 per cent compared to 25 per cent in the USA and 15 per cent in Europe.
Experts state that obesity is more so in the urban areas, with 30-50 per cent general obesity levels and 40-70 per cent abdominal obesity levels. Indian women are more prone to abdominal obesity than men. Obesity levels are half or even less than those urban levels in rural areas.
The anti-obesity market in the country is estimated to be over Rs 2,000 crore which incorporates obesity surgery, gymns, low calorie food supplements and ayurvedic treatments to combat obesity.
In India, a sedentary yet fast paced lifestyle as well as high calorie food intake, plus lack of exercise have contributed to the increase in the number of obese and overweigt people.
As per a 2006-2006 National Family Health Survey , obesity is especially prevalent in Delhi, Punjab and Kerala, due perhaps to the richness of food as well as income levels. Hence, there is a massive market to be explored in these states.
