Wed, 04 Nov 2009
Northern Ireland is in desperate need of an NHS diabetes screening service to handle the exploding numbers of the diabetics due to the increasing levels of obesity .

The province may be facing a Type 2 diabetes epidemic due to the numbers of overweight people.

Some 201,000 people are said to have ‘prediabetes’ here, which renders them 15 times more likely to develop diabetes.

The condition is viewed as a precursor to Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to grave health problems like heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, amputation and blindness.

Presently, there are 66,000 people in Northern Ireland with Type 2 diabetes, which is frequently related to obesity.

This level is forecast to soar drastically, placing an even greater burden on the health service.

It is vital to Identify and educate people with prediabetes so they can make healthy lifestyle changes, reverse their condition and greatly lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
