Fri, 27 Nov 2009
The European Commission has approved Sitagliptin as an addition to insulin (with or without metformin) for those with Type 2 diabetes who are not able to control their condition effectively via a combination of diet, exercise and insulin.

Sitagliptin is a once-a day DPP-4 inhibitor that works by blocking the action of DPP-4, an enzyme that destroys the hormone incretin.

Incretins enable the body to produce more insulin purely when it is needed and lower the amount of glucose being produced by the liver when it is not needed.

This is a great improvement for the quality of life of Type 2 diabetics, when it is not possible for them to achieve good blood glucose control via lifestyle and other medication.

It is best for those with diabetes to have as wide a range of effective treatments for this condition.

Good blood glucose control is essential for people with diabetes to enhance wellbeing and protect against long-term damage to the kidneys, eyes, heart, nerves major arteries.
