The World Health Organisation (WHO) is stressing that diabetes is reaching epidemic levels worldwide.

This disease presently affects 246 million people worldwide.

It is forecast that this will increase to 380 million in the next 20 years.

The International Diabetes Federation stresses that the biggest increases are anticipated in developing countries.

There were hardly any diabetics in Africa at the start of the 20th century, however, it is endemic in today's Africa .

Many people die from diabetes problems prior to having the opportunity to be diagnosed.

However, with small investments from governments and individuals, diabetes can be controlled and even prevented via simple interventions.

Diabetes and hypertension are leading public health problems in Africa, with it being ranked as the third most often reported disease in the majority of district hospitals.
