Diabetes testing is going to be made compulsory in India .
Blood tests to detect diabetes are most likey to be made mandatory at health centres throughout India as part of the international practice of "opportunistic screening" norm.
This scheme is going to be introduced in its pilot stage in 10 states.
This intervention is called the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPDCS) and seeks to detect these diseases early.
India's health ministry stated that it does not know the precise number of diabetics in India. However, the World Health Organisation estimates that there were around 32 million diabetics in India in 2004.
It is forecast that India is going to have the most diabetics (80 million) in the world by 2030.
