South Asian children in the UK are 13 times more likely to have Type 2 diabetes .

Children in the UK of South Asian origin are 13 times more likely to have Type 2 diabetes than white children.

This is a new statistic from Diabetes UK's new report, Diabetes in the UK 2009: Key statistics on diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is 6 times more common in people of South Asian descent.

Diabetics are three times more likely to develop heart disease, one the possible devastating complications related to diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is normally found in adults. Hence, it is especially worrying that South Asian children are at such a high risk. One of the reasons that South Asians are more likely to develop this condition is that they eat traditional foods high in salt and fat as well as western ‘fast foods', thus increasing their risk.

Type 2 diabetes is to be taken seriously as it can lead to complications including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputation and blindness .

It is considered to be a genetic condition however multiple cases can be prevented via lifestyle changes.
