The pharmaceutical company , Piramal Life Sciences, has just finished the first clinical trials of its new medicine that is going to render treatment of diabetes more easy and affordable.
Diabetes affects almost 40 million people in India alone.
The P1736, drug molecule as it is presently known, is being developed for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes .
In the first phase trial single and multiple increasing dose studies were undertaken with 30 and 22 healthy volunteers in the Netherlands .
Recent International Diabetes Federation statistics highlight that approximately 40.9 million people in India are diabetics .
The report goes further to suggest that this number is likely to increase to nearly 70 million people by 2025.
The drug did not have any adverse effects on liver function and did not trigger blood plasma volume expansion or weight gain, the company stated.
Swati Piramal, director of Piramal Group, stated that the company is trying to lower the burden of disease by discovering affordable and new cures for unmet medical needs. He expressed the company's delight at having achieved this milestone in its quest to discover a cure for type 2 diabetics .
