According to recent diabetes research in the UK, it appears that drinking a very modest amount of alcohol could help to protect women from developing type 2 diabetes .
However, at this stage, no clear links between alcohol and blood vessel function have been drawn, and the research is something of a mystery. One conjecture is that a hormone secreted by fatty tissues, Adiponectin, accounts for the protective effect of alcohol in relation to diabetes .
However, the other ways in which alcohol affects type 2 diabetes are less clear at this stage. Further research is needed on the association to determine whether any potential treatment pathways or diabetes drug possibilities can be opened up.
