Diabetes affects some 24 million Americans

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a report indicating some 24 million people in the US have diabetes, and increase of three million new diabetics in the last two years.

The report also indicated the scale of the pre-diabetes problem, with almost 60 million American people affected. Pre-diabetes occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not enough to be diagnosed diabetic .

The report shows that almost 8 in 100 people in America have diabetes, which is now reportedly the leading cause of death and disability in the US. Diabetes complications include retinopathy, neuropathy, kidney and heart damage.
