According to recent reports in the diabetes news, children delivered by Caesarean section are 20 per cent more likely to develop diabetes later in life. How the circumstances of childbirth relate to diabetes development remains unknown by scientists.
Type 1 diabetes affects around 250,000 people in the UK. The disease develops in childhood and requires constant insulin injections in order to manage. Caesarean sections are also more common in the UK, around 24 per cent of all births.
The director of research at Diabetes UK, Dr. Iain Frame, reportedly commented: "Not all women have the choice of whether to have a Caesarean section or not, but those who do, may wish to take this risk into consideration before choosing to give birth this way."
